Click the link above and see Kool-aid sucked into the glass tube simulating saliva being sucked out of a patient's mouth. Once air enter the tube, it blows through the fluid and pushes it against the walls of tube. At that point, the fluid barely moves. Once the air is blocked by a person cheek and gum or when they close their mouth, the fluid begins to flow backwards. It continues to flow backwards until it hits the point were the air was blocked. In the video, the valve represents the person's cheek and gum or a person closing their mouth on the saliva ejector. The fluid flows backward to the person's cheek and gum or it dumps into the patients mouth if they closed on the saliva ejector. You can see in the video, it looks like all the fluid has been sucked away. Yet when the valve is closed, fluid very quickly builds up on the valve. Imagine that happening in a patient's mouth.
